Detailed description of Southgate Golf Club

Southgate Golf Club, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Saint George, Utah.

Southgate Golf Course first opened for play in 1963. The course was designed by John V. Lagant.

This 6,100-yard par-70 layout features two distinctly different nines. The front nine cris-crosses the Santa Clara River while the back nine traverses the foothills of the Tonaquint Mountain range and offers great views of downtown St. George with its red rock backdrop.

Although not a long course, with eight of the nine holes requiring shots over or around water, golfers must bring their "straight-shooting" clubs. The favorite hole at Southgate is the par-four seventh. After a tee shot that must avoid the river on the right and out-of-bounds on the left, players must hit an approach shot over a lake to an undulating green with water right and two deep grass bunkers behind. When playing the back nine at Southgate, bring your camera. These nine holes traverse along Tonaquint Mountain and provide awe-inspiring views of the St. George area. The key to successful play is keeping the ball in the fairway. As with most mountain courses, the greens on Southgate's back nine slope from back to front. Remember to always keep your approach shot below the hole. Uphill pitts are much more forgiving than downhill putts.

Southgate Golf Club is one of the most player-friendly courses in the area. Southgate is a good course for those looking for an enjoyable round of golf as opposed to a brutal test of your skills.

Black tees: 6,100 yards, course rating 69.1, slope rating 118.

Not my favorite course to play in St. George. The clubhouse needs a lot of work, and there is no course marshall when you get stuck behind new golfers. There are a lot of houses, so you don't feel that you can swing your driver too often.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
